PRESENT
TENSE:
Raya Ward (she/her, b. 1998, Atlanta, GA) is an transdisciplinary artist whose work spans physical, digital, and social space.
Her physical works in collage and installation manipulate her and others’ data artifacts to explore concepts of diary, surveillance, family, and grief. Her gatherings and performances challenge norms of conviviality and communing by creating unique containers for human happenings. Finally, as one half of tomorrow soup, her digital works and websites explore the potential for a soft internet that holds space for communal care, queer joy, and climate grief.
In her freelance practice, she supports early teams, companies, and projects in field research, concept design, product design, and general design consulting. Recent clients have included a climate startup, an experimental social network, and an ecological design studio.
Raya was born and raised in the metro-Atlanta area and is based in LA. Currently, she is focused on getting to know her new neighborhood and neighbors, making (often), dancing (often) and putting her feet in the dirt. She generally prefers to be in the water than on land.
PAST
TENSE:
In two different positions at Apple, Raya designed novel health experiences with Health Special Projects Group and design systems at scale in IS&T.
For two years, as co-founder and Chief Product Officer, she started, scaled and eventually exited Adora, an ed-tech company focused on making personalized, digital campus visits accessible anywhere, anytime. When Adora was acquired by Full Measure Education in March 2021, she joined as a design manager to transition the company and lead product integration.
She kicked off her career as a research assistant at Georgia Tech, a freelance designer for various startups, and an intern for an art gallery in Nepal.
STUDIES:
In undergrad, Raya created her own major at Princeton University Human-Computer Interaction and Design and minored in Visual Arts. Her studies explored topics including technology and society, speculative design, critical race studies, cognitive science, and information design. Her senior thesis, Mournful Design for Critical Climate Futures, co-written with Kyle Barnes, explored the potential of grief in designing towards just climate futures.
